Almost for a big shock for a moment. Was initially intending to reformat my PDA, since I made a mistake and accidentally overwritten the Contacts and Address Book programs with some third party one. It didn’t work as well, so I uninstalled it. When that happened, the original ones were lost. No choice but to clear it and start afresh.

Since it was a good several months since I last did that, I couldn’t recall how to do it. Apparently there’s a method to safely do it, but by the time I discovered it, it was too late. Thankfully though, I didn’t brick it. It’s all working fine now, thankfully.

Maintenance Menu:
Hold “Rec” button anddepress the “Power” button.

Getting the Scummvm to work. This is probably one of the most important software to install. With this, I can play all the old’ish adventure games without needing a full fledged pc! Time to complete Full Throttle!

This is the forum thread to keep an eye on, for future developments and releases.

2. Install all the libraries as above. Note that as of scummvm 0.8.2, libsdl_1.2.5-slzaurus has to be used. 1.2.6 version refused to work. The scummvm interface refused to display itself.
3. Copy the libfluidsynth.so.1.1.1 to /home/root/usr/lib
4. From there, create symbolic links (ln -s) of it to libfluidsynth.so.1 and libfluidsynth.so
5. Install Scummvm 0.8.2
6. Set it to run as fullscreen.
7. Calendar brings up the menus. Address should be left click while menu should emulate a right click, or something like that. Cancel skips the animation.

Compressing the sound for talkie versions of the game would save disk space, naturally.

1. Download Scummvm tools.
2. Download Lame (for encoding into mp3)
3. Download OGGenc (for encoding into OGG vorbis. Somehow, the executable refused to run on my PC)
4. Compress them!

Getting midi to work.

Actually, timidity offers only a command line interface to play midi. That’s what I managed to get working anyway. Installed it, fired up the terminal and used timidity to play the cccool.mid file. Apparently some of the patches can’t be loaded. Will probably have to solve that some other time. At least I managed to get a midi file to be played!

1. Install libSDL_1.2.6cvs-1_arm.ipk (if it isn’t already installed)
2. Install libSDL-mixer_1.2.6-zports-1_arm.ipk (that’s what I used anyway)
3. Install timidity_2.11.2-1.3-k4_arm.ipk (I installed it to the CF card)
4. Extract the contents of guspat-20000706-required.tar.gz (I sent them to the CF card too, since I installed timidity into the CF)
5. Make a copy (or symlink) of timidity in /home/QtPalmtop/etc
6. Edit the timidity.cfg file, allowing it to point to the proper directory where the patches are located (in my case, they would point to /mnt/cf/Documents/application/timidity)

This should do the job.

Interesting point to note. I didn’t exactly follow the instructions found here.

One of the better media players around.

1. Install the mplayer file mplayer-bvdd_1.1.5-1_arm.ipk
2. Install the Zplayer front end
3. Run Zplayer and enter the mplayer parameters
• -really-quiet -framedrop -cache 2048 -vo fbdev -fs
4. Set Zplayer to run in magnified mode
• cd /home/QTPalmtop/apps/Applications/
• vi zplayer.desktop
• remove the Display line
5. In the Qtopia desktop, set Zplayer to run in magnified mode.

How to get the RPG game Nethack running on my Z

Install onto Internal Memory. Have yet to try Ktrove on it yet.

1. chown zaurus -R /home/QtPalmtop/games/lib/nethackdir
2. edit nethack.cnf

• QT_TILEWIDTH=8

Getting Kismet to run on my Z.

1. In terminal:
1. su
2. cp /mnt/cf/ipk/libstdc++-3-libc6.1-2-2.10.0.so /usr/lib (copy the libstdc from it’s originaing location to the /usr/lib location)
3. cd /usr/lib (change directory to /usr/lib)
4. chmod 755 libstdc++-3-libc6.1-2-2.10.0.so (change mode of file to owner rwx access and group / other rx access)
5. ln -s libstdc++-3-libc6.1-2-2.10.0.so libstdc++-libc6.1-2.so.3 (create a symbolic link to the original file, with the new file so.3)
2. Install libpcap0_0.7.2_arm.ipk
3. Install Kismet package kismet_2005.07.R1_arm.ipk
4. Install Kismet Qtopia package kismet-qt-2.0.0_arm.ipk
5. Uncompress the kismet binaries
1. cd /usr/local/bin
2. ln -s /mnt/cf/ipk/uclx (don’t forget to make the binary executable)
3. uclx -d kismet_client
4. uclx -d kismet_server
6. edit the kismet config file

8. Set kismet to run as root.

Phew. That’s quite a bit of hacking. Watch this space for changes.

Very cool game, about connecting network terminals to the server through the mess of cables and nodes scattered. The game is described as a network administrator’s nightmare, but it’s sure intriguing for any gamer.

First off, install the IPK. There’s a 1.2 version patch for ARM which looks for levels in the

/opt/Qtopia/share/tickypip/levels folder.

Get the pdb files from any source. Somehow, the IPKG file available doesn’t seem to be able to install it correctly. There’s a TAR.BZ2 file which has most of the maps floating around somewhere on the net. Else, extract it from the SIS version for Symbian UIQ. The files can be copied to where the Tickypip level files are located

/mnt/cf/QtPalmtop/share/tickypip/levels

Create a symbolic link all to the /opt folder and it should work. It’s restricted, so the user should be changed to root first before symlinking them.

How to: Getting GAIM working on the Sharp TOSA.

The procedure would be as follows

A working copy of GAIM. Next would be to add the IM accounts and woohoo.

Finally, I’ve managed to migrate my list of contacts from my smartphone to my new new toy. It was more of a hack, really. My default, I sync my smartphone’s data to Lotus Organizer. However, the other software, Qtopia desktop can’t sync to Organizer. Well, apparently the Qtopia desktop stores it’s data in the human readable XML format, which I just discovered. Which is good. Thankfully, Lotus Organizer is able to export my addressbook entries into a text format, comma separated, of course. So, all I had to do then, was to rename it into a CSV file and presto, instant importing into Excel. From there, it’s only a matter of time, in order to insert the necessary fields and trying to follow as closely the structure of the original XML file. Afterwords, I fireed up Notepad++ and with the search and replace function, I removed all the unnecessary double quotes. Then, all I have to do is to copy the entries and paste them into the new XML file and sync them back. It worked! To a point. Somehow, I think I missed out the small details of the field designators, as the e-mails somehow got lost. I guess I’ll have to do the process again, but at least it’s so much easier compared to beaming them via IR from my phone.
